Mayfair Mews
Planning permission was gained to increase the mews’ internal floor area by almost 80 per cent. Thorough exploration of rights of light allowed us to create a roof profile that maintained existing light angles. Turning the accommodation upside down made the creation of a barrel-vaulted roof possible with rooflights flooding the top floor with daylight, ideal for the Craigie Aitchison Crucifixion and growing art collection. The traditional black façade and door lead to a triple-height entrance hall and top-lit staircase.
The new setback roof profile allowed us to bring light down into the back reception room and the 12m deep lower floors. Weightless white walls float above the bespoke oak flooring, and the loose furniture made from the same wood completes the simplicity.
The kitchen, being part of the open plan main floor, was hidden behind floor-to-ceiling cabinet doors. 2 workstations, one a floating block of stone and the other, the event horizon, a niche of black slate worktop, splashback and cheeks, with black sink, tap, hob and extractor, completely disappear at night.

The bedroom floor has just 3 doors, frameless 150mm thick panels which are in effect walls that pivot open. The family bathroom with its shower and WC screened left and right by etched glass, frames a cantilevered oak vanity unit and hand made one-off ceramic bowl like a ceremonial found antiquity.
