Holborn Penthouse
Consisting of just two vast rooms of bare brick and uneven floors, we brought a crisp, contemporary open plan feel to this apartment. Instead of slicing the space into several rooms, our client wanted just one bedroom and the rest open plan to maximise the feeling of space. Half-width or half-height walls partially screen different activities, while allowing space and light to flow freely. By creating our own internal steel structure, we were able to run a cantilevered stone stair through two floors and onto the roof terrace without cutting into the party wall. The stair terminates in a vast automated glazed rooflight that slides to one side, providing access to one of the three roof terraces.
Cantilevered stone stair. Free-standing walls screen the dining room from the reception. A long timber bench serves as seating for the dining area but can open to reveal a fold-out bed.
The study was concealed from the bedroom by a low wall containing niches for books.

The etched glass wall and door of the bathroom allow sunlight from the south to illuminate the study. The low screen wall conceals the study from the bedroom beyond and acts as a display space for the ceramic collection.
